Issues and Controversies within Youth Sport

Edward Gavel

Joline Boudreau

Sara-Lynne Knockwood

69% of Canadian youth participate in organized sport at least occasionally during the school year

30% of Canadian youth say they rarely or never participate in organized sport during the school year.

38% participate once a week
- 12% participate regularly,

- 19% participate sometimes

Why do kids participate in sport?

Fun Skill development (learn and improve) Challenge Improving physical fitness Feeling competence/ belonging Enjoyment of competition Making friends through team involvement

However, a negative element of this involvement has emerged that is a major concern00.

Parents

Parental Interference

Under-involved parents
Parents support children positively in sport  Want fun experience for them

Parents who push them to excel in sport

  Parents track performance

Parents who interfere with the sport

Strive for some sort of gain   (ie. scholarships through sport)

Might try to 00e the coach00/font>

  Live through their kids

Sport Specialization

Placing a child in one sport that trains year round.

One step further would be to specialize within that sport with a specific position.

Overemphasis

on Performance and Winning

Considered one of the most controversial areas in organized sport

Overemphasis on Performance and Winning

Devotion to excellence and past achievements are used by sports clubs and programs for recruiting.

Overemphasis cont0000/font>

Is winning everything? Common to associate success with winning Do parents actually think this good for their kids??

Where does this overemphasis come from00

In our society Do parents actually think winning IS important to the child.

Problems with emphasis on winning.

Best players are played more often In individual sports, training is rigorous and analyze other competitors. Kids quit sports because they aren00 having fun and the overemphasis on winning by parents and/or coaches.

Role of coaches in Youth Sport

The coach may have the greatest potential to influence a youth in minor sport!

According to Coaches of Canada:

Coaches recognize and develop talent and believe in possibility Coaches provide inspiration The profession of coaching needs to be guided by the highest standards of ethical conduct Coaches must lead by example in their sport and their communities

Conclusion00/font>

Parental support for competitive sports Issues mentioned occur way to often in youth organized sport. Adults sometimes forget reasons why kids play; maybe if reasons kept in mind some issues may be avoided and result in the child having a better experience
