On September, the CIC Training
and Learning Group convened its charter meeting at the University of
Wisconsin at Madison. The meeting was held from 8:30am until 3:30pm
with approximately 45 minutes break for lunch discussions.
Agenda items included:
Welcome and Introductions
Group Logistics
Governance
Communications Options
CIC Office Support
Training Promotional Materials
Security Training Efforts
Welcome
Our first meeting was generously
hosted by the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Cathy O00ryan opened
the meeting and introduced Ann Stunden, UW-M CIO, who offered enthusiasm
and encouragement for continued success of this new group. In round-table
fashion, each individual shared information about her/his role in IT
Training and described IT Training efforts at her/his campus.
Group Logistics
The group voted to meet face-to-face
twice per year, at least during the first year to insure the opportunity
to build and maintain positive rapport and encourage greater production.
The next face-to-face meeting will be held in early April. Lynnell Lacy
offered to host the April meeting at UIUC. The group will meet monthly
via video conference with the exception of the months of October and
December, 2005.
Discussion moved toward idea-sharing
to avail topics of interest for future meeting agendas. Lisa Lacombe
will generate a survey using SurveyMonkey to poll the group for a priority
list of the following topics to gain prioritization for the first five
topics:
Project Management
Courseware Efficiencies
Costing Models
Online Training Development
Assessment
Contingency Planning
IT Competency Programs
Harnessing Students as a Resource
Audience Diversity
Inter-institutional Collaboration Opportunities
Security Training
Training Modalities
Training Environments
Intra-Institutional Ties Between Training and Help Desk Units
Management of
Training Staff.
Group Governance
The group elected to implement
Chair-led structure. The Chair will be responsible for setting meeting
agendas, logistics, communications, appointments, etc.
There will be a Chair and a
Chair-elect for this group, the chair taking the first face-to-face
meeting as an opportunity to help train the Chair-elect. Cathy
O00ryan has been elected as the first Chair and Lisa Lacombe as the
Chair-elect. The next election will be held in October, 2006.
Before each topical video conference
meeting, the Chair will try to find interest from someone on the group
to serve as a Topic Meeting Leader to provide greater insight/experience
with regard to the topic-elect. If no Topic Meeting Leader comes
forth, the Chair will then run the meeting.
Topical video conference (VC)
meetings will be at a consistent day/time each month with the understanding
that not everyone may be able to attend every meeting. The group plans
to offer a stream of the VC so others can watch it later.
Meeting minutes 00someone
from the group will volunteer at the beginning of each meeting.
Karen Partlow mentioned that
the group needs one representative to attend the Technology Coordination
Committee, which is comprised of the Chairs of all the CIC IT peer groups,
who meet twice a year via videoconference to share status reports.
Cathy O00ryan and/or Lynnell Lacy had hoped to attend the next TCC
VC on 11/09/05 at 10:00 a.m. (CT); however, they are both attending
SIGUCCS on 11/09. Lisa Lacombe is attending ITLDP at MIT on that date
and is also unavailable. We regret that we are unable to join the Technology
Coordination Committee for its November meeting and look forward to
participating at the next meeting.
Communication Options
CIC Currents e-newsletter
Web page on the CIC site
Email list (to which the group
already belongs)
CIC Support
Karen and Galen shared information
about the support offered by the CIC, not limited to but including videoconferencing
availability, phone conferencing, the email listserv (above), the CIC
Web pages, and IT Licensing Task Force availability.
Training Promotional Materials
Many members brought promotional
information detailing the services they provide.
Security Training
The group held a brief discussion
to see what others are doing with regard to Security training. With
limited time remaining, the group agreed to include this topic as a
survey topic for later discussion.

The group will convene via
VC in November.
