About STAP
The Staff Training Assistance
Program (STAP) is a staff employee benefit that reimburses tuition costs,
registration fees, and required textbooks for any training activity
that is:
Either
Related directly to your current
job
Or
A career development effort
undertaken with the knowledge and approval of your supervisor

The Administrative Guide Memo
22.11, entitled 00taff Development Program,00and dated December
15, 2003, sets forth that staff development programs:
Support employee development
by providing partial or full reimbursement of costs of courses, seminars
and workshops that enable employees to:
improve performance in
current jobs, or prepare for career development (STAP)

Program Benefit
STAP reimburses $800* per
fiscal year (September 1 through August 31) for eligible staff members
STAP monies are not part of
departmental budgets, but a separately maintained fund
Unused STAP funds are not
carried over from fiscal year to fiscal year

Staff Eligibility
Who is eligible for STAP
Staff must be in a benefits-eligible
University position that is six months or more (four months or more
for bargaining unit employees) and 50% FTE or greater
Academic Staff (senior lecturers,
lecturers, academic staff-teaching, and artists-in-residence) who work
50% time or more are also eligible. A length of service is not required.
No Service Requirement
STAP is immediately available
upon hire for eligible employees
Who is not eligible for STAP
Faculty, students, or temporary
workers are not eligible for STAP

Eligible Training
Your supervisor and/or manager
has final approval on courses, workshops, seminars, or other training
that he/she deems either related to your current job or are career development
If related to your current
job, discuss how you will use the knowledge or skills you gain in your
current job
If a career development effort,
discuss your future direction so your supervisor or manager is clear
how the course, workshop, or seminar fits into your overall career development
plan
Courses, workshops, seminars
or other training can be classroom or online

Academic Learning vs.
Training
If you are taking academic
courses that are part of a degree program approved by your supervisor
or manager, you may be eligible for the Staff Tuition Reimbursement
Program (STRP). Please see
