Training  within the Met Office

Nigel Wood

Dynamics Research NWP

2

The work of Dynamics Research

Responsible for the development and application of numerical methods within the Office Current non-hydrostatic, compressible, semi-Lagrangian, semi-implicit global/regional/climate model Operational since August 2002 (00ew Dynamics00 Focus now to develop next Met Office operational model By building on foundations of the New Dynamics Addressing perceived weaknesses To improve accuracy, robustness and efficiency Address conservation issues Retrofit if and when appropriate

Met Office Training

1100 staff involved in all aspects of a modern National Met Service Training is key; 00nvestors in People00accreditation Areas of training are extensive: Forecasting Research (NWP, Climate etc) Business Commercial Health and Safety Management IT

4

Training Suppliers

Met Office College = coordinating body College trainers provide all forecasting training Other areas of training provided either directly from specialised companies, or via a combination of Office trainers and external consultants

5

Research Training

Significant focus on Conferences, workshops etc 00n the job training00/font> Option for post-graduate study while working (PhD) Primary formalised training for researchers is 00et Training for Graduates00/font> Joint venture between Office and Reading Met Department Based around the Met Dept00 MSc in Meteorology Post-experience Certificate for Met Office Scientists (CMOS) Or, with dissertation, full MSc.
