Ordering Chemicals Check the inventory before ordering anything For anything new to the lab, obtain an MSDS and review proper practices with the lab group Put MSDS in Notebooks
Storage of Chemicals 00incompatible chemicals (acids and flammables) cannot be stored together Acids and flammable liquids stored in separate base cabinets underneath hood Solids are stored over here Chemical bottles can only be stored on the floor if they are in secondary containers Refrigerators are not equipped for flammable storage (when compressor turns on spark can be generated)
Chemical Labeling All chemical containers must be labeled so anyone in the lab knows what it is if it spills Put hazard warnings on label For peroxide forming compounds put the date the container was opened For containers only you use put your name/initials on them
Use of Chemicals Volatile hazardous chemicals must be used in the fume hood Alcohols and 3N HCl can be used on the lab bench When working with hazardous chemicals, wear lab coat, safety glasses, and gloves. No open-toed shoes or shorts Remove gloves before handling keyboards, phones, doorknobs. Electrophoresis 00when handling acrylamide gels make sure you wear nitrile gloves00here may be residual acrylamide in the bag Rotovap 00ethanol is used here , need trap before connection to central vacuum
Fume Hood Use We share hoods so clean up after yourself and put chemicals away when done working in the hood.  Cluttered hoods don00 contain vapors as well as clean ones. Work at least 6-inches back in the hood with the sash as low as possible.  Lower the sash when you finish your work (better containment, saves energy) Hood #1 is used primarily for immuno histo chemistry 00formalin is used here (see chemical hazard summary) Hood #2 is used for pharmaceutical processing 00dimethylformamide is used here Hood #3 is the satellite accumulation area 00use the Quick Reference Guide to remember the rules for hazardous waste
Hazardous waste 00/font> I am required to do weekly inspections of the Satellite Accumulation Area. Ask if you don00 know how to properly accumulate waste empty chemical bottles 00first rinsate goes in waste bottle
Gas Cylinders Secure with strap (1/2 to 2/3 of the way up) Use correct regulator and gauge Always wear safety glasses when working with compressed gases Emergencies Go over emergency flip chart000.report to xxxxxxxxxx during a building evacuation Know the difference between minor and major chemical spills Equipment locations 00drench hoses, emergency shower, fire blanket, fire extinguisher
Incidents Paper near Bunsen burner when ethanol used 00could cause fire Water bottles in lab not allowed00no drinking or eating in lab Orphan Chemicals 00may cost us several thousand dollars to get analysis done on unknown waste
Non-Chemical Safety Issues Boxes 00can00 be stored within 18 inches of sprinkler head Tripping hazards Electrical safety Sharps
