Why do we believe what we believe? 00History of the Bible -

D.L. Moody-

00 A man can no more take in a supply of grace for the future than he can eat enough for the next six months, or take sufficient air into his lungs at one time to sustain life for a week. We must draw upon God00 boundless  store of grace from day to day as we need it.00/font>

Why listen?

Basis of your faith If the Bible is not true why believe

2Ti 3:16  All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

2Ti 3:17  that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

Mat 4:4  But he answered, "It is written, "'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

Canon

1.  Canon 00nbsp;

from the Greek word kanon meaning a ruler or measuring rod; this was probably derived from the Hebrew kaneh, meaning a reed used for measuring. Thus, 00anon00refers to a standard to measure things, or norm (Cf. Gal. 6:16). That idea, then, was applied to scripture (for the first time by Athanasius around 350) in the sense that they are accepted as the standard or norm for Christians, the rule for faith and practice.

2. Canonicity 00

the character of the book or document which indicates that it is a part of the canon of scripture, i.e., a part of the written Word of God.

3. Canonization 00/i>

the process through which both the Jews and Christians recognized what documents were to be considered a part of the canon (although the Jews did not use this word), i.e., a part of sacred scripture.

How was the Canon formed?

5 Principles

1. Authority? 2. Prophetic? 3. Authentic? 4. Dynamic? 5. Was it received?

Importance of the Canon

Two councils gave 00fficial00recognition of the 27 books of the NT:

a. the Council of Hippo (393) and b. the Council of Carthage (397).

Modern Division of the OT Canon

The Law (5 books) History (12 books) 00Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1& 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther Poetry (5 books) 00Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Sol. Prophets (17) 00Major: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Daniel, Ezekiel Minor: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi

This division, then, has a total of 39 books.

Modern division of NT Canon

In addition to 5 Old Testament Canon principles:

Apostolic authority Church Fathers Translations
By the end of the 4th century, the Church had recognized the extent of the canon and considered it closed, i.e., no more books would be added to it.

Final Note

00hat I want to build is a people that take every sentence in the bible seriously

00hat00 my plea 00that you would Be a Biblically saturated people00/font>

You can make anything you want out of those words 00listen to all the sentences 00dig and dig and dig to see the one unified root that holds it all together00/font>

00oncepts instead of biblical texts00/font>

00ou could have such power  in this city 00such power if a 1000 people would become a biblical people to read the bibles and understand every sentence 00/font>

Quotes from John Piper

What now?

00bove all - supreme and paramount importance - have your souls truly happy in God himself - day by day seek to make this the most important belief in your life00/font>

00he secret to all effective service is joy in God00/font>

Rev 1:3 00lessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep that what is written in it, for the time is near.00/font>

Why are there so many different translations / interpretations of the bible?

People point to the variety of denominations as an example that there can be no unanimity of agreement between bible believers Within all branches of Christianity, we find the same basic understanding as to what the Bible teaches. They usually accept the same creeds that assert such basic truths as that God made man in his image, with the freedom of choice, and that man chose to revel against God, thus bringing sin into the world Jesus makes it clear 0000e who believes in the Son has eternal life: but he who does not obey the  Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides in him00/font> John 3:36
