Procedures
Career Services involves an important process00elping students choose and attain personally rewarding careers and employment opportunities. In addition, Career Services assists employers in developing effective partnerships with college programs which contribute to career positions that benefit Olympic College students and graduates.
The mission of Olympic College00 Career Services is to assist students in the process of exploring, planning, developing, evaluating, and implementing their career plans and academic goals. The primary goal of Career Services is to provide comprehensive career and employment services that result in the best match for students and employing organizations or companies.
In keeping with the spirit and intent of the Career Services mission statement, the following policies and procedures serve to assure students and employers professional, effective, and relevant career and employment services:
Policy 1
Olympic College students and graduates are the primary customer for Career Services. Individuals who are interested in pursuing their education at Olympic College may request career and occupational assessment assistance and referrals to appropriate faculty advisors or educational advisors.
Procedures for Student Employment
Students must complete the Career Center registration form in order to receive quality and effective career and employment services. An assessment of the student00 skills, work experience, education, and career goal will be conducted to assist with appropriate employment referrals.Students who do not have a current resume will receive assistance with creating a resume.
Students must inform the Career Services office when they secure employment off campus.
Federal Work Study, WorkFirst Work Study, and Regular Student Employment student employees must meet with the Program Director or Career Services Advisor. Students will receive a hiring packet, orientation to student employment forms and procedures, as well as referrals to work situations that coincide with the students00major.
State Work-Study is an opportunity for qualifying students to work off campus, in a job that matches the student00 major, and receives a prevailing wage.
State Work-Study employers will submit a contract, job description, and business profile to determine eligibility for the State Work-Study program. The student will become an employee of the organization with salary reimbursement of 65% for employers who have contracted with the Higher Education Board. The Higher Education Board will renew employer contracts for the State Work-Study program each year.
Volunteer, Internships, and Community Service opportunities are available for students to gain experience and knowledge of a work environment that coincides with their major.
Students will be pre-screened for work experience, education, and abilities as they are related to the employment situation.
Policy 2
Career Services professionals, without imposing personal values or biases, will assist students in developing career plans or making career decisions.
Procedure for Career and Occupational Assessment Services
Career Services professionals will provide students with information on a range of career opportunities and types of employing organizations. The students will be informed of the means and materials to gain access to labor market information and occupational resources, which may influence their career decisions and selection of college programs or educational institutions.Qualified personnel will evaluate or interpret tests of a career planning and employment nature. Students will be informed of the availability of testing, the purpose of such tests, and the disclosure policies regarding test results.
The Career Services Director or Advisor will provide individual and group assistance with career development skills such as: resume writing, cover letters, informational interviews, interviewing strategies, targeted job search assistance, and information on state/federal guidelines and laws that pertain to fair and equal employment.
Career Services will work collaboratively with other campus divisions, programs, and community-based organizations in assisting students with career decisions and educational planning.
Policy 3
Career Services will maintain Equal Employment Opportunity compliance and follow affirmative action principles in career and employment activities in a manner that includes the following:
Referring all interested, qualified students for employment opportunities without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, or disability, and providing reasonable accommodations upon request.Assisting recruiters in accessing certain groups on campus to provide a more inclusive applicant pool.
Informing all students about employment opportunities, with particular emphasis on those employment opportunities in occupational areas where certain groups of students are under-represented.
Developing awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural differences and the diversity of students and providing responsive services.
Responding to complaints of EEO noncompliance, working to resolve such complaints with recruiters and students, and referring such complaints to the appropriate campus department or administrator.
Policy 4
All information pertaining to students including school records, personnel information, and current student status, will remain confidential.
Policy 5
Employers posting job opportunities with the Career Center must abide by all state and federal rules and regulations pertaining to fair and equal employment opportunities.
Employers must have a federal tax ID number.Employers must abide by IRS laws and regulations
