SIFCO Technology Strategy
(1997)

Visionary CE who was an R&D champion Move from 00echnology user00to
00echnology developer00/font> Achieve industry leadership in high temp. protective coatings Source research funding and expertise in Ireland and Europe. R&D becomes an integral part of the company00 business.

Research Funding 00
National versus FP

National funding for industrial R&D less competitive, easier to access.. but FP research funding more generous:
permits companies to continue R&D in difficult business times. More networking with international research partners in FP.

SIFCO and FP funded projects

Several RTD projects in FP 4 and FP5 1st Marie Curie contract in FP5. Individual  research fellowship 00 very beneficial FP 6: SIFCO attempts to build enduring industry 00academia partnerships. Seek suitable academic research partners A work plan that provides benefits for all partners

Marie Curie/TOK/
Industry-Academia Partnership

Name of project:    00URFACES00/font> Industry sector   00   SIFCO Academic sector
Cranfield University (UK)
U. of La Rochelle (F)
Trinity College Dublin00CBE (IE). 3 IAP00 under one umbrella It helps to be persistent 00nbsp;
3 attempts to win this contract!

00URFACES00 project

4 years from 01/10/2006 14 researchers;146 months of secondment Two types of researchers 0000xperienced00and 00enior00researchers. Two types of employment contracts Total EU funding ~ Euro 1m ~ 80% of funding for staff costs

00URFACES00/font>

Infusion of advanced expertise into SIFCO at low cost Exposure of SIFCO staff to top class university research thinking and practice An opportunity for SIFCO staff to re-energise their careers. An opportunity for academic staff to experience the realities of research in a commercial environment. A career path for  ~ 14 researchers

Some Difficulties?

Pre-payment Only seconded time is paid. 2 different employment contracts Taxation issues Which host pays salaries?

SIFCO:  RTD projects versus Marie Curie project ?

RTD projects
Pre-defined research areas;
Difficult to manage  00Slow moving
Partners may have different agendas SIFCO has had one real success out of  4 projects completed;
(but that still makes it all worth while.)

Marie Curie projects ?

Better suited to SIFCO. More in control of your own destiny. Infusion of new research talent and know-how at low cost. An innovative mechanism to build sustainable long term relationships with  research centres of relevant expertise.

FP  00the Balance sheet

Bureaucratic.   Consumes a lot of time . Worthwhile giving  feedback 00EU listens and changes 00but slowly! Building a good relationship with EU project officers is v. important 00especially when problems arise. 1 successful project can compensate for a multitude of difficulties

An unexpected turn

A SIFCO specific issue May 07 00SIFCO Irl. sold to
PAS Tech (Kansas, USA) Policy change Contractual complications Currently seeking to re-structure the consortium 00ever a dull moment! Thanks to the NCP00.
