purpose: People credited with this unit standard are able to: develop individualised training programmes for selected dogs as supervised by the qualified Guide Dog instructor; train selected dogs for specialist Guide Dog work as supervised by the qualified Guide Dog instructor; and monitor the individual training programmes.

accreditation option: Evaluation of documentation and visit by NZQA and industry. 

moderation option: A centrally established and directed national moderation system has been set up by Animal Nursing and Technology (ANTECH) Board. 

special notes: 1 Assessment is evaluation of the ability of the dog to perform a guide dog role by application of temperament and physical assessment criteria. 

 

 2 Training is the process of learning the required skills to carry out guide dog work.  This must be carried out in a sequential manner in appropriate environments. 

3 A qualified person is one who has met the IFGDSB standards.

Elements and Performance Criteria 

element 1 

Develop individualised training programmes for selected dogs as supervised by the qualified Guide Dog instructor.

1.1 Implications of each quality are described in terms of the assessment criteria and training programme. 

1.2 The supervised training programme acknowledges and works with the individual qualities demonstrated by each dog.  

element 2 

Train selected dogs for specialist Guide Dog work as supervised by the qualified Guide Dog instructor. 

performance criteria 

2.1 The supervised training programme is carried out in accordance with IFGDSB and RNZFB standards and requirements. 

Range: commands - voice, gesture; equipment; obedience and recall; working positions; speed and tension; straight line principle; kerb work and crossings; management of distraction; traffic work; right shoulder work; destination work. 

 

2.2 For each individual dog in training, faults are identified, causes established, and remedies implemented in accordance with IFGDSB and RNZFB standards and requirements as supervised. 

2.3 Training environments are sequentially selected to suit the individualised training programme and learning ability of each dog as supervised.

3.1 Guide Dogs are cared for and trained in accordance with IFGDSB and RNZFB standards and current legislation. 

3.2 Records are maintained according to IFGDSB and RNZFB standards, in-house requirements, and current legislation. 

3.3 Public profile is maintained in accordance with RNZFB standards. 

3.4 Physical and temperament analysis and profile indicate readiness for matching of qualified Guide Dogs with applicants as supervised.
