building and congratulated us on Spam Assassin.Treasurer’s Report The Treasurer’s Report was tabled. Membership
continues to be favourable. For the month the net
income is $40,272 which is $10,881 ahead of
budget. For Year to Date the Net income is
$304,910 which is $228,789 ahead of budget.
The Office photocopier needs replacing. It is 14
years old and is giving problems. The Office
Manager will get quotes for a replacement either a
Canon or a Mita.Secretary’s Report A privacy concern has arisen regarding members
data being placed on a server outside of our control.
The Australian Computer Society has approached us
through one of our members who is on their
Committee regarding a closer working relationship. We have some data from Telstra about their message

CarriedVolunteer of the Month The Volunteer for the Month for March is J Webster.Legal We have appointed George Wisely of Rampart Legal
as our advisor for technical computer issues.Privacy A limited file of data is made available to the
iHelpers for storage on their own PCs so they can
assist members with problems. This data is also
uploaded to the iHelpers database which is hosted in
the USA. Access to the application is password
protected and made available to the iHelpers. We
do not have audit rights to the security controls over
this data. The Committee would like to have the
data within our firewall and our own control. To do
this we need to have an NT server set up. This
matter is to be sent to our legal representative toascertain our responsibilities. In the meantime we
need to keep the application running to service our
members. The President and the Internet iHelp
Coordinator will determine how to keep the
application running but without all the data that is
currently stored.Internet/BBS We are still waiting on responses on what facilities
will be available including having our own domain
name for ADSL. There are new offers to the public
being made weekly. Some look very good but the
excess volume charges make the actual cost quite
high for normal use. We need to act before many of
our members take up these offers and become
locked in to a contract and therefore will not be able
to take up ADSL with us.
Quotes are being obtained for co-location. We
probably will not put any equipment in Chadstone.
There has been no progress on the database.Building Futures We have appointed CKC as our property consultants.
Level 2 at Chadstone that we were interested in was
leased the week before. An expression of interest for
level 3 has been lodged. This has some area that
will continue to be occupied by Gandel Trust.
Another possible option is Chadstone Place near Bi-
Lo and inspections are being arranged.Interest Groups Geelong is starting a Beginners Group. Ex—training
PCs have been given to Geelong, Warragul,
Essendon and Ripper Hardware.
PC hardware is required for Video Production and
Digital Imaging and another projector is needed to
cover special requirements including repairs. Video
Production will assemble their own machine from
quality components. Digital Imaging had approval
for a new PC because of their move of meeting
place. They will take the Video PC and, if that does
not suit, then the purchase of the new PC will be
revisited.
Motion:
That Video Production purchase a PC for $2,150 as
quoted, their PC be given to Digital Imaging and a
Sony project similar to the others be purchased for
less than $3,000 from the same supplier.
Moved: Bill Dair
Seconded: Bill Ford
Carried
Compute Aid is looking for more PCs — Pentium II or
better. They are imposing a charge of $5 per
monitor or printer donated to cover the cost of
disposal of old machines. They are improving
facilities and our members may be asked to assist intraining activities. To date 1100 machines have
been shipped with an estimated value of over
$550,000.
We need to provide Windows XP for the Interest
Group machines as our members are now moving to
that operating system. We will try to get a special
deal for their supply.
The Conveners meeting will be held on March 27.Training & Shareware There were 6 courses run with 21 attendees. A draft
of the Video Tape to DVD course is being reviewed.
The new training PCs have been well received.
Shareware sales were down because of problems
with supply of the printable media. There have been
problems getting I Rankin’s ADSL working in his new
home.Swap Meets During the month the 10 swap meets produced 4
new members. Visits to Interest Groups have
produced two extra volunteers but more are needed
especially for Camberwell. The swap meet PC stored
at the North East Genealogy SIG is to be redeployed.Strategic Planning The Internet team has responded to the circulated
plan. The other teams need to provide their details
and goals to be achieved.Member Support Services A Management Console has been produced that will
allow the Dial Help people to update their details for
the web page.Library One of the old training PCs with an internal Zip drive
and CD-RW for backup has been moved to the
Library. A quote for the supply of additional shelving
has been received from Nova Library.
Motion:
That we purchase shelving from Nova Library as per
quotation for $665.50.
Moved: Barry Martin
Seconded: John Swale
