7 Employee Benefits All policy and procedures regarding employee benefits can be found in the Management Manual Section IV. For specific information concerning the following employee benefits, please reference the sections indicated: * Annual Leave     Section IV-3.010 * Holidays      Section IV-2.010 * Personal Leave    Section IV-3.010 * Professional Development Opportunities Section IV-2.030 * Tuition Free Courses    Section II-2.042 * Sick Leave      Section IV-3.070 In addition to the policy and procedures regarding employee benefits found in the Management Manual , full-time faculty may find the following information helpful: Death Benefits: If a faculty member dies while still in active service (while being paid salary) after one year as a contributing member of the Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System of North Carolina, his/her beneficiary will receive a single lump sum payment. The payment equals the highest 12 months' salary in a row during the 24 months before death, but no less than $25,000 and no more than $50,000. This benefit is also paid if the faculty member dies within 180 days of the last day for which he/she was paid salary. It is in addition to any other benefits to which the faculty member may be entitled. Disability Benefits: Short-term benefit payments equal 50% of 1/12 of annual salary plus 50% of 1/12 of annual longevity payment (if applicable). Short-term benefits are paid monthly for 365 calendar days, and can be extended for as many as 365 additional days under certain conditions. Payments begin after a 60-day waiting period. Long-term benefits are payable after the conclusion of the short-term disability period. Payments equal 65% of 1/12 of annual salary, plus 65% of 1/12 of annual longevity payment (if applicable). Long-term benefits cease when a person reaches age and/or service requirements to qualify for an unreduced service retirement allowance. 8 Longevity Pay: Faculty in regular positions will receive longevity pay if those employees meet the requirements of aggregate qualifying service as set forth in subchapter 2D.0109 of the North Carolina Administrative Code. Complete information is available from Human Resources, telephone extension 2404. Longevity pay is not considered a part of annual base of contract pay. Longevity Pay is made in a lump sum, subject to all deductions, during the pay period in which all eligibility requirements have been satisfied. Medical Benefits: Group health insurance is available to all employees in regular positions. The College pays a portion of the coverage cost for eligible fulltime     employees. Additional coverage may be purchased for dependents at the group rate. Part-time staff members in regular positions may join the group plan, but must pay the total cost for coverage. Retirees are also covered by the plan. As of October 1, 2001, one health insurance plan is available, the State of NC Comprehensive Major Medical Plan (State Health Plan) The booklet providing detailed information about benefits and provisions of the health insurance plan is available in the Human Resources Office, MCC 370, telephone extension 2242. An optional dental plan (employee-paid) which pays 50% to 100% of covered services is available. Some procedures are subject to a $50 deductible per year. The plan covers orthodontic services for adults and children. President's Award: The President's Awards for Outstanding Service or Innovation acknowledge and express appreciation to regular employees who make outstanding and innovative contributions to the College during the current year. One faculty member from each Division may receive the President's Award. Retirement: All full-time employees in regular positions are required to join the Teacher's and State Employees' Retirement System of North Carolina. Employees and the State share the cost of providing for retirement benefits. The employee contribution rate is automatically deducted from monthly paychecks. This amount is not taxed until it is withdrawn. Members of the Retirement System are vested after five years of creditable service. An employee can receive unreduced benefits after 30 years of service,  age 60 with 25 years of service, or at age 65 with five years of service; a reduced benefit after age 50 and 20 years of service, or at age 60 with five years of service. Booklets describing the main provisions of the Retirement System are available in the Human Resources Office, MCC 370,  telephone extension 2242. State Employees' Credit Union: A minimum deposit of $25.00 is required to join. The Credit Union offers a wide range of financial services, including direct deposit of paychecks. A Credit Union ATM machine is located on the first floor of the Medlin Campus Center Annex. 9 Section 125 Flexible Benefits: Optional insurance plans are provided to supplement employee's medical coverage.  Cancer, hospital intensive care protection, hospital confinement and accident/sickness/disability policies may be purchased on a pretax basis. Child or dependent care assistance is also provided through the Flexible Benefits Plan. The plan reimburses employee for daycare expenses incurred for a dependent child, disabled spouse, or dependent parent. Optional Insurance Plans: Long Term Care Insurance is available to regular full-time and regular part-time faculty. This insurance helps to defray expenses involved in providing personal care on an ongoing basis to those with a disabling or chronic medical condition. Services covered include: skilled care performed by a licensed health care professional, intermediate care, custodial care, adult day care, respite care, and hospice care for the terminally ill. Pre-paid Legal Services Plan: The Pre-Paid Legal Services Plan provides an attorney to help employees with legal questions and problems. The plan gives assistance with preparation, traffic tickets, business questions, lawsuits, IRS audits, and other issues of a legal nature. Supplemental Retirement Programs: The Supplemental Retirement Income Plan of North Carolina, often referred to as the State's 401(k) Plan is available to faculty in regular positions. The Plan offers a systematic savings program with both contributions and investment income tax sheltered until paid to participants as benefits. The Plan enhances your employee benefit package by providing you with benefits such as tax deferral, investment flexibility, access to funds with a loan provision and the peace of mind you get from knowing you are building your financial resources for retirement. In addition to the State 401(k) plan, a 403(b) supplemental retirement plan is offered. Teaching Excellence Awards: Each year, Excellence in Teaching Awards are awarded to faculty members. The Faculty Association conducts a nominating process and a committee of past winners reviews the nominations and selects the winners. They also select an "honor roll" from among the nominees. Teaching Innovation Award: This award is given annually to one faculty member who is selected by the members of the GTCC Board of Trustees for applying innovative techniques in the teaching/learning process. The recipient of this award is announced each year at College graduation. Jametown/Ragsdale YMCA: The YMCA is located on the Jamestown campus and does have special rates for GTCC employees. Contact the YMCA for specific details. Workers' Compensation: GTCC's Workers' Compensation Rules and Procedures are established by applicable Federal laws and State statutes. 10 Changes in these legal guidelines will take precedence over published college rules and procedures. All accidents shall be reported to the Chief of Campus Police. Accidents involving injuries to employees must also be reported to the Director of Human Resources. As of June 1994, drug testing is required for all alleged work-related injuries. Failure to comply or a positive drug test may result in termination of employment. An employee at GTCC who is injured on the job is eligible to receive compensation and other benefits while suffering the effects of an on-the-job injury. In the event of an injury, both the employee and the Supervisor have certain responsibilities required by law and good business practice.
