1. POLICY    It is the policy of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (UNMHSC) Clinical Operations to provide for the establishment of a student assistance program.  Priority of selection for the program will be placed on students working toward degrees in health-related fields.

DEFINITION  

In order to be eligible for the student assistance program, an individual must: 

3.1 Enroll for a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours in an undergraduate degree program or nine (9) credit hours in an advanced degree program at an accredited educational institution. 

Maintain a 2.7 grade point average or better. 

3.3 Work toward a health care related degree, which may be in a health care related field or an area such as business, finance or human resources management. 

4. PURPOSE 

It is the purpose of this policy to provide work related experience for eligible students in a controlled environment as well as to provide guidelines and parameters under which the student assistance program will operate. 

5. GENERAL INFORMATION  

5.1 The positions filled in this program shall be budgeted and, therefore, will be assigned to positions identified as Full Time Equivalents (FTEs) in the approved budget.  These FTEs will be provided for in the Human Resources Department budget. 

5.2 Due to the student assistance objective of this program, student employees will not be considered temporary employees for purposes of the ninety (90) day limitation. 

Temporary student employees are eligible to work beyond the ninety (90) day limitation.  Student employees will be compensated at the grade and rate for the position specified in the current compensation plan.  PROCEDURE  

6.1 Administrators will submit appropriate requirements for eligible student participants to the Administrator of Human Resources. 

6.2 After screening by the Human Resources Department, students will be referred to and interviewed by appropriate managers. 

Subsequent to hiring, student employees will not be scheduled in excess of sixteen (16) hours per week or thirty-two (32) hours per pay period.  Exceptions to time restrictions may be made during summer months, school vacation periods or with the approval of the Human Resources Department.

 

Student employees will not work schedules that interfere with class times.    Time worked by student employees will be scheduled to augment Hospitals staff and to assist in accomplishing Hospitals projects.   Payroll sheets will be completed in accordance with instructions provided by the Human Resources Department. 

7. STUDENT EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES 

Student employees must maintain the eligibility requirements as provided in this policy.    Upon acceptance into the program, the student employee must report to the Human Resources Department after each semester to indicate whether or not he/she desires to continue in the program.

7.3 In the event the student employee wishes to continue in the program, evidence of grades for the semester just completed and proof of enrollment for the next semester must be presented to the Human Resources Department. 

8. Miscellaneous 

8.1 The Human Resources Department will monitor the student assistance program.
