The Genome Management Information System (GMIS) of the Oak RidgeNational Laboratory Life
Sciences Division recently received technical publication, art, and online awards from the East
Tennessee and Pittsburgh chapters of the Society for Technical Communication (STC).
ORNL Genome Management Information System Wins Publication Awards
The Genome Management Information System (GMIS) of the Oak RidgeNational Laboratory Life
Sciences Division recently received eight publication, art, and online awards from the East Tennessee
and Pittsburgh chapters of the Society for Technical Communication (STC). Beyond the Genome
poster won a Distinguished (First Place) award in Informational Materials and has been entered in
STC's international competition.
Excellence Awards were given to Advanced Biomedical Technology Research in Online Books and
Artificial Retina Project in Informational Materials, both sponsored by the BER Medical Sciences
Division. Report on the Imaging Workshop for the Genome to Life Program won an Excellence in
Technical Reports. Merit awards were given to Report on the Imaging Workshop for the Genome to
Life Program in Cover Design, Gene Gateway Workbook in Training Materials, Genomes to Life
illustration in Technical Art , and Genomics and Its Impact on Science and Society00he Human
Genome Project and Beyond in Informational Materials.
Publications such as these make DOE genomics program research more accessible to the greater
scientific community and to the public. Receiving honors were Anne Adamson, Jennifer Bownas,
Denise Casey, Betty Mansfield, Sheryl Martin, Marissa Mills, KimNylander, and Judy Wyrick of GMIS;
and Shirley Andrews of Y-12 Graphic Design Services.
STC is a professional organization for technical writers, editors, illustrators, managers, and educators.
With more than 17,000 members in 151 chapters worldwide, it is the largest such group in this field.
Each year, the international STC presents more than 250 awards in 58 categories.
