USA TEEN
This national publication for young women held a contest for new nail polish colors.
Challenge
To convert thousands of written contest entries into a format that could be used by USA
Teen's Marketing Department for future subscription prospecting. A specific entry blank had
not been designed so entries were every shape and size imaginable. Entrants had the
choice of using any method to relay their information. For example, addresses were on the
back of pictures, in letters, and on the outside of envelopes. The writing utensils used were
limited only by the participants' imagination. The materials received with the entries included
letters, photographs, and even samples of the actual nail polish.
Solution
Planning:
All departments were informed of the scope of the USA Teen project. A
meeting was held to discuss the organization of the contest entry information
due to the varied format in which entries would be received.
Execution: Contest information was published in USA Teen. The rules explained that
each submission should contain the entrant's name, address, age, phone
number, and the nail polish color.
Data
Preparation: Entries were picked up from a local post office box, where they arrived for
the next three weeks. Each submission was opened, the contents extracted,
and the entries reviewed to locate the information that was to be captured.
The entry contents were then faced, batched and sent to the Data Capture
Department.

Entry:
PRIORITY'S team successfully captured 100% of the valid entries, which
totaled over 25,000 submissions.

Processing: The data was output in ASCII and Macintosh formats to a designated address
and a paper copy was filed in storage per the customer's request.
Six months after completion,
a duplicate copy of the data was needed by USA Teen.

retrieve and output the data within 24 hours.
