Palacky University, June 27 - July 4, 2004
Word from SVU PresidentThis is the last occasion I have before the forthcoming SVU Congress to address SVU membership. This is the 22nd World Congress the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU) has organized since its inception in 1958. It is being convened in cooperation with Palacky University, Lord Mayor of the City of Olomouc and C.E.O. (Hejtman) of the Olomouc Region, under the auspices of Vaclav Klaus, President of the Czech Republic.
Based on our periodic reports and announcements on SVU Website: www.svu2000.org you could see that this will be a fantastic event, certainly a pivotal event of the year for anyone interested in the Czech and Slovak culture and affairs. The University Rector Prof. Jana Macakova and Dean of the Philosophical Faculty Docent Ivo Bartecek, under whose leadership and counsel the preparations have been made, have gone out of their way to make all the university resources available to us to make the Congress a success and all the visitors welcome.
The Congress, with its varied and highly interesting program, will cover just about every area of human endeavor from the arts, music, literature, history, education, law, politics, media to business, law, medicine, science, technology and much more.
Apart from various sessions, discussion panels and symposia, there are numerous exciting cultural and social activities being planned, including opera, concerts, social-get-together, banquets, guided walking tours through the historic City of Olomouc, bus excursions through the beautiful Moravian landscape (with castles, wine cellars, scrumptious food and lots of fun).
We have many members of Moravian ancestry. They ought to take advantage of this unique opportunity to visit the land of their ancestors. It is unlikely that there would be comparable occasion in the future where you would learn and see so much about Moravia and its rich history and culture. After all, this is the land which produced John Amos Comenius (Komensky), Sigmund Freud, Johann Mendel, Edmund Husserl, Thomas G. Masaryk, Leos Janacek and Kurt Godel 00the personalities who shook and shaped the world.
Take advantage of this unique opportunity. You will enjoy it, make contacts and learn a lot too. This will be a great opportunity to meet all sorts of interesting personalities, dignitaries, government representatives etc.
I urge everyone who has not as yet made up his or her mind to come to Olomouc and enjoy the meetings and all the fun. You won00 be sorry.
MILA RECHCIGL, SVU President
Innovative Way for Students to Come to Olomouc SVU Congress
Prof. Margaret Hermanek Peaslee developed a Study Abroad class that will include attendance of the SVU World Congress in Olomouc and for which students can earn three college credits from the University of Pitts-burgh. The class is described on the web at
http://www.upt.pitt.edu/upt_academics/ czech_2004.htm
We encourage students to take advantage of this great opportunity.

A Meeting of the
General Assembly of SVU
to be held on Friday, July 2, 2004 at 3:00 PM.
Umelecke centrum, Konvikt, Palacky University,
Univerzitni 3, 772 00 Olomouc, Czech Republic
According to the SVU Bylaws (Article 10), regular meetings of the General Assembly shall be called annually. In the event a sufficient number of members entitled to vote are not present (at least 100) at the time for which the meeting has been called, the general membership meeting will be held one hour later.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From Executive Board
Despite the unpredictable bad weather, a large contingent of SVU Executive Board members attended the scheduled Board meeting on February 7 at SVU President00 house in Rockville, MD.
The meeting started at 9:30 AM and, with eight members present, there was a quorum to make decisions. Following the approval of the Minutes from the previous meeting, Mila Rechcigl informed the Board about several news items, including the regretful loss of Ivo Budil00 candidacy for Rector of the University of West Bohemia and the death of several SVU members, including that of Prof. Jan Milic Lochman, Dr. Milada Smetacek and Dr. Karel Baroch.
Treasurer Frank Mucha gave a brief update on the status of finances since his last December report and since he sent out the reminder dues notices for the current year. He also informed the Board that he received accounting for the Iowa Conference but without the back-up documentation which he needs for the auditors before the books can be closed. According to a short note from J. Fiala, a check from the conference proceeds was being sent to SVU Treasurer.
Editor Clinton Machann sent in his progress report on the periodical Kosmas, including the tentative table of contents for the next issue. Since the older material received from the former editor Bruce Garver has not been edited, the Board accepted Clinton Machann00 proposal to have it incorporated in the next issue(s) of the periodical rather than publishing it as a separate issue, as originally planned. Jiri Eichler is ready to send out the Kosmas promotional package to the potential subscribers in CR and SR.
SVU Directory 00b> Rechcigl informed the Board members that the Directory was distributed among the SVU members who previously ordered it. There are, however, difficulties in storing and transporting the remaining copies to the US. They had to be quickly and unexpectedly removed from their temporary storage at the Czech Academy and for the time being are at the Institute of Contemporary History, through courtesy of its director Oldrich Tuma.
English Papers from SVU World Congress in Plzen 00Their editing has been completed and the final manuscript is in the hands of Jiri Eichler who is putting in the final touches before sending it to University of West Bohemia for printing.
The planned monographs, one on Czech and Slovak Theatre Abroad and another on the Czech Opera Abroad, are in progress, under the respective editorships of Vera Borkovec and Dagmar Hasalova White. With reference to the third proposed monograph on Czech and Slovak Visual Art Abroad, the Board is searching for a suitable editor.
Rechcigl gave a status report on the preparation of the SVU World Congress at Palacky University on June 27-July 3, 2004. The logistical preparations have been completed and local arrangements are in place. Otakara Safertal agreed to serve as Congress Treasurer and will handle registration for the participants from overseas and from abroad. Local registration, i.e., registration of permanent residents of the Czech and Slovak Republics, will be handled by our Olomouc co-organizers.
Every participant, including speakers, need to register as soon as possible. It should be noted that Americans and other foreigners, who reside and work now in the Czech or Slovak Republics, as well as former emigres who returned to CR or SR, will also have to register with Otakara Safertal. Only permanent Czech and Slovak residents will register locally.
Dr. Ivo Bartecek, Dean of the Philosophical Faculty at Palacky University, who is the chief Congress coordinator for the Olomouc side, sent in detailed information on the major events, as well as various social and cultural activities, including the planned guided tours and excursions through the Moravian countryside. The Board was impressed with the plans and expressed appreciation to Dr. Bartecek and his colleagues for their efforts. Based on the information received from Dr. Bartecek, Mila Rechcigl, jointly with Ota Safertal. have prepared the Congress Registration Form which will be sent to the Congress participants from abroad.
With reference to Congress academic program, i.e., individual sections, discussion panels and symposia, Mila Rechcigl will have the responsibility for organizing the overseas English panels, while Dr. Bartecek will coordinate the Czech and Slovak panels with the participants from the Czech and Slovak Republics. Based on previous contacts and discussions, Rechcigl distributed a tentative list of topics for academic sessions which has been further augmented by individual board members. The list has been posted on SVU Website and sent to local chapters.
Mila Rechcigl also briefed the Board on the followup of the recent Working Archival Conference, organized jointly with the Czech and Slovak Embassies, which he coordinated. He completed editing the Conference Proceedings which are now in the hands of the publisher in Prague. As a result of the Conference, Czech and Slovak American Archival Consortium has been established which will coordinate the future efforts toward preservation of the Czech and Slovak archivalia abroad.
The next Board meeting has been scheduled for Saturday, April 3 in Mila Rechcigl00 house in Rockville.
