Chairmen RogeRio C. LiLenbaum, mD, FaCP Director, Thoracic Oncology Program The Mount Sinai Cancer Center Miami Beach, FL maRk a. SoCinSki, mD Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Program Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chapel Hill, NC Provided by Statement of Need Despite several decades of extensive research, the median survival for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is approximately 1 year. Patients with early-stage NSCLC can sometimes be cured with surgical resection and chemotherapy, but the majority of patients present with advanced disease, which makes local therapy impossible. Faced with these grim statistics, investigators are seeking novel applications of imaging techniques as well as predictive and prognostic markers that will allow for early and more efficient treatment. Their extensive research has led to steady advancements in recent years, including the development of novel targeted and chemotherapeutic agents, enhanced approaches to standard treatments (such as novel radiation regimens and multimodali- ty therapies), and improvements in the adjuvant setting. This conference will focus on the increased ability to diagnose and effectively treat patients with lung cancer and will include overviews on imaging, radiotherapeutic, surgical, chemotherapeutic, and biologic strategies. Novel therapies and techniques currently undergoing development will be emphasized. Results of recent research efforts, as well as the design and rationale of ongoing studies and the optimization of these techniques for today's clinical practice, will be presented and discussed. Target Audience This activity is intended for medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists; thoracic surgeons; pulmonologists; nurses; pharmacists; advanced practitioners; physician assistants; and other health care professionals interested in the treatment of patients with lung cancer. Educational Objectives After participating in this educational activity, attendees should be able to: 1. Assess the results of recent studies using radiologic imaging and radiotherapy for the treatment of patients with NSCLC. 2. Describe the standard of care for patients with early-stage NSCLC, and discuss recent studies incorporating adjuvant and/or neoadjuvant chemotherapy into treatment regimens for patients eligible for surgery. 3. Assess the efficacy of novel targeted approaches for the treatment of NSCLC based on the results of recent clinical trials. 4. Evaluate the safety and efficacy of recent trials investigating therapeutic strategies for patients with relapsed or progressive NSCLC. 5. Assess the results from recent studies aimed at identifying markers and patient characteristics that are predictive of response to specific therapeutic agents. 6. Describe the various surgical options for treating your patients with NSCLC. 7. Evaluate the results from recent clinical trials investigating the use of novel agents or regimens for the treatment of patients with SCLC. 8. Compare and contrast the safety and efficacy of current therapeutic approaches to managing patients with unresectable malignant pleural mesothelioma. Method of Participation Lectures, visual aids, case presentations, audience response system, and discussion will be utilized to engage attendees and enhance the learning process. All attendees will receive a comprehensive CD-ROM of the program presentations approximately 4 weeks after the conference.
