Installing the NOIS GUI software for use with Forum.
These are instructions for getting up and running with NOIS. If you need assistance please ask your IRM service or call the CIO National Help Desk at 1-888-596-4357.
You will need a PC (running Windows 95, 98, or NT) with a network connection to Forum.
First, are you a Forum user? If not contact your local security officer or IRM service. Your security officer will give you your password and verify code.
Next, get the NOIS software. To use NOIS on Forum, you only need the GUI software. You do not need to install the VistA NOIS package at your site to use NOIS with Forum.
Download the file using FTP from NOIS1_1.ZIP from the anonymous.software directory at 152.129.1.110. This is the same procedure for obtaining any VistA software packages.
You will need to "unzip" the file. To do this you will need a program such as WinZip or PKZip. Unzip it to a temporary directory on your computer. If you cannot do this, make a call to the help desk, they will have someone make sure you can get these files.
Double click the Setup.exe. This will take you through the steps of installing NOIS v1.1. Take the defaults.
You now have nois installed in it's directory (the default is C:\\Program Files\Vista\Nois1.1). Go to the directory and make a shortcut for NOIS.exe (you can do this by dragging the program to your desktop).
You now have an icon on your desktop for using NOIS.
You must do one more step. The HOSTS file must be set up. The hosts file is used to map an IP address to a server name that is running NOIS. In this case the server name is FORUMSERVER and the IP address is 152.128.1.25. For Windows 95 and 98 the hosts file is in the Windows directory. For NT, it is in the Winnt\System32\Drivers\Etc directory. You need to edit the hosts file (you can use Notepad) to include
152.128.1.25 forumserver
note: If you do not have a hosts file, you can copy the hosts file sent with the application to the appropriate directory. Also, if you are not able to edit or save changes in this directory, you need to have someone with those permissions make the changes to this file.
You should now be able to go back to your desktop, double-click the NOIS icon and log into Forum. If you have any problems please call the help desk or log a NOIS call using the menu options on Forum.
